“Utagawa Kunisada was born in the Honjo district of Edo. At age 14, he was admitted to study under Toyokuni, head of the Utagawa school. Many of Kunisada’s works embody the characteristics of the institution, focusing on traditional subjects such as kabuki, bijin (beautiful women), shunga (erotic prints), and historical prints. His collection continues to impress and elongate this history of woodblock prints during the Edo Period.”
